Raise boring

A one-stop shop for raise boring: vent shafts, second escape ways, drain holes and paste holes — quality, accurate holes, all the time, every time.

ShaftCon Raise Boring, the Atlantis company

ShaftCon Raise Boring — the Atlantis company — is the group’s raise-boring arm, led by Sarel Smit as CEO and raise-boring partner. In the profile’s own words: vent shafts, second escape ways, drain holes, paste holes — whatever you need, we do, with safety and quality as the first, last and always attitude.

The name carries a long history. Atlantis was awarded its first slot-raise drilling contract by the then Premier Diamond Mining Company, and was later approached by AngloGold Ashanti to design and build a self-erecting, crawler-mounted blind-hole raise drill: the Reef Eater. Six were manufactured and the mine operators trained on them.

The machines themselves are designed and built by AGC — the Atlantis Group of Companies — in Randfontein, which is also part of the ShaftCon Group.

Why raise boring with ShaftCon

One contractor

The raise is bored by the same group that sinks, lines and equips shafts — so a vent shaft or escape way can be bored, supported and equipped under one contract.

Machines built in the group

AGC designs and manufactures the Raise Mole range of raise, box-hole, reef, drain-hole and slot borers, and supports them with spares, repairs and training.

Experience

Slot-raise boring at Premier Diamond Mine and the Reef Eater machines for AngloGold Ashanti are part of the Atlantis track record.
