Shaft lining with wet-crete and ring-back cat ladder installation, Sasol vent shaft

Case study · Sasol · South Africa

Sasol raise-bore vent shafts

Support, lining and equipping of raise-bored ventilation shafts at Sasol’s Sigma and Matla collieries — from winder house to commissioning. Completed LTI free.

The project

Turning a raise-bored hole into a working shaft

A raise-bored hole is only the start of a ventilation shaft. At Sasol’s Sigma and Matla collieries, ShaftCon supported, lined and equipped the raise-bored vent shafts, and fitted them with travelling ways and second escape ways. The client on the project was Sasol Coal Mine, together with Master Drilling.

The job ran from surface to shaft bottom. We erected the winder house and installed the winder, pre-assembled the equipping stage, bank steel, bank doors and headgear, then lined the shaft with wet-crete and installed a ring-back cat ladder. The final step was commissioning the headgear, winder and equipping stage.

Both the Sigma and the Matla projects were completed LTI free.
