Shaft pre-sink and sinking

Setting up a vertical shaft for sinking: pre-sink bank steel, A-frame, winches and the sinking stage, then the sink itself. 2015.

The project

Where a vertical shaft begins

Before a vertical shaft can be sunk to depth, the collar has to be established and the shaft equipped for sinking. This 2015 project, listed in our portfolio under sinking and pre-sink, shows that stage of the work from start to finish.

The photographs on this page record the pre-sink of the vertical shaft and the installation of the pre-sink bank steel, the manufacture and installation of the pre-sink A-frame and shaft bank doors, the installation of Dymot winches for pre-sinking, the ring-back ladders, and the installation of the pre-sink stage — followed by the sinking stage in the shaft.

Much of that equipment comes from our own workshop: ShaftCon manufactures sinking stages, winches, ring-back ladders and bank steel, which is why one contractor can take a shaft from the box cut to sinking without a hand-over between suppliers.
